How does Alternative Medicine see depression?
According to Ayurveda,
depression is explained as ‘Vishadaroga’. Imbalances in psychic energies
(Trigunas) such as Sattva, Rajas, Tamas and imbalances of physical energies
(Tridoshas) such as Vata, Pitta and Kapha, are believed to cause various mental
disorders. Life force or Pranavayu is responsible for proper functioning of the
mind. Weakened vitality (Ojas) disturbs the Prana which then fails to stimulate
the mind. The disturbances in the Rajasik and Tamasik energies create sadness,
despair and lack of interest in life. Lack of mental discipline, indulgence in
negative thoughts/activities/emotions, hatred, anger etc, are known to cause
imbalances in psychic energies. This leads to disorders like depression.
In Ayurveda the main treatment
methodology is Pancha Karma Chikitsa, with long term medication. This will help
for the mind and body connection. It also resets the internal functions as per
individual requirements.
According to Yogic Science, Asana practice helps to encounter anxiety driven
depression because it reduces stress hormones like cortisol & adrenalin and
increases the level of endorphin, dopamine, enkephaline, serotonin,
melatonin and other hormones. This makes
our body & mind calm and comfortable.
Specific asanas combat anxiety and
energises the body. Some asanas calm the tensed nerves and combat fatigue, open
the chest, lift the spirit and
invigorate the body. Asana practice improves the circulation, stimulates
the nervous system and generates a feeling of well-being. It also relieves
irritability and balances the emotions by quietening and nourishing the nervous
system. Yogasana practice always balances the endocrine system.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, any disorders in the body are a
result of imbalances of yin and yang organs. Acupuncture therapy can help to
regulate brain functions, calm the mind, nourish the heart, relieve the mental
stress, regulate the Qi flow, and strengthen the essence of life.
Interestingly there are specific points that can
transform phlegm and dampness from the body. These points also clear phlegm
from the heart meridian and calm the spirit. Acupuncture therapy activates all
the channels and alleviates pain. This restores normal functioning of the body. What does I-Chrysalis do for the treatment of depression?
